TBL Brings New Energy to Merit TV Sports Programming

In today's fragmented media landscape, sports content remains a consistent draw for viewers seeking competitive excitement and human drama. The Team Boxing League (TBL) boxing format is now finding a home on Dr. Phil's Merit TV, creating a perfect marriage of athletic competition and compelling personal narratives.

Through the first five weeks, TBL on Merit TV has attracted a combined audience of 3.5 million viewers, with the recent Houston vs. Phoenix matchup becoming the second most-watched TBL telecast, according to Nielsen data.

"We are building a sport with a partner who is patient and has vision," explains Ken Solomon, president and CEO of Dr. Phil's Merit TV and former head of The Tennis Channel. "Boxing is underleveraged, underutilized, and underexposed. This is a real sport - we're not selling violence. We're telling stories and building fandom."

The partnership creates valuable opportunities for Merit TV, including:

  • Attracting a more male-centric audience beyond the traditional older female viewers familiar with Phil McGraw
  • Developing content beyond the sport through behind-the-scenes storytelling of fighters' lives
  • Establishing the network within the competitive media landscape through recognizable sports programming

Launched in April 2024, Merit TV combines entertainment and news programming across talk, lifestyle, and true crime genres. The network features prominent personalities including Nancy Grace, Steve Harvey (who acquired an equity stake), and Chris Harrison with wife Lauren Zima hosting a daily lifestyle show.

The TBL coverage extends beyond just broadcasting matches. "We're doing segments on Team Boxing League on the news, with ongoing standings updates that can be tagged by event sponsors," Solomon notes. "The beauty is the storytelling - we can't do enough on these personal journeys that boxers take. They're fighting not only for their families and themselves but for their teammates."

This partnership demonstrates how sports content continues to provide valuable viewer engagement through emotional connection, competitive drama, and personality-driven storytelling - offering Merit TV a distinctive programming advantage in the crowded media marketplace.
