Boxers from the Northland continue to make their mark on the national stage, and now a Jungle Boy Boxing Gym coach has secured a spot in the prestigious Team Boxing League. Alissa Boltz of Duluth has officially joined the Atlanta Attack, bringing her skills and experience to this innovative boxing format.
"It’s a little different than a normal professional boxing debut because we’re within a team. Typically, each boxer has one or two rounds. Then all of the boxer scores go into a team score, which determines the winning team," Boltz explained.
Now in its third season, Team Boxing League matches consist of 24 three-minute rounds. Each match features 24 fighters across eight weight classes, making it a unique blend of individual competition and team strategy. Boltz, who had been following the league closely on social media, seized the opportunity to try out when the timing aligned perfectly.
"Ironically, I was going down to Atlanta for a marathon because my goal is to run a marathon in every state. Atlanta Attack had their team tryouts while I was there, so I went to the tryouts on a Friday and then ran my marathon on Sunday," Boltz shared.
Zach Walters, owner of Jungle Boy Boxing Gym, praised the Team Boxing League as an excellent platform for boxers transitioning from amateur to professional ranks.
"You get a lot of activity, a lot of exposure. It doesn’t count against any one record because you’re only fighting one round. Now, the crazy part is, these rounds are really intense. You get three minutes to establish your case and a 24-round chunk for your team," Walters said.
Currently, the Team Boxing League features 12 squads across the United States. Boltz and the Atlanta Attack will next be in action on April 6, facing the Nashville Smash.
